Apple released iOS 10.1 today, a small but significant update to the operating system. The most interesting new feature is undoubtedly their much-touted Portrait Mode, exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus, that makes your photos look like they were shot with a DSLR. That and more in today’s news.
- You should update to iOS 10.1 even if you don’t have a 7 Plus, though, as the update also includes a variety of bug fixes, performance improvements, and security patches. As far as Portrait Mode goes, it’s pretty cool and often outputs impressive results, but the digitally-created shallow depth of field doesn’t always stand up to close scrutiny. Apple says the feature is still in beta, though, so it’ll no doubt see improvements. [9to5Mac & WSJ]
- Apple also released updates to all their other operating systems, including macOS 10.12.1, watchOS 3.1, and tvOS 10.0.1. [9to5Mac]
- You can now use PayPal in Facebook Messenger. In other words, when you make a payment within the app for whatever reason—to a company through a chatbot, for example—you can use your PayPal info to pay them. The feature is currently rolling out in the US. [VentureBeat]
- Pokémon Go is going to get spooky. From October 26th to November 1st they’re celebrating Halloween by making certain ghostly Pokémon appear more frequently and increasing candy rewards. Check out the preview below. [Kotaku]
