Firefox on Windows: If you'd prefer to watch videos or listen to music in your own desktop players (instead of dealing with, say, Flash), extension PlayLink will let you shoot any audio or video link to the desktop player of your choice.

No one likes using Flash, and playing media on the web can be annoying. If you close your browser window by accident, or if a plugin crashes the program, you lose what you were watching or listening to. We already know that you can play YouTube videos directly in VLC, but the PlayLink extension for Firefox takes it a step further, letting you send any web media to a desktop player (or another browser) right from the context menu.

After installing, open up the extension's settings. Here, you set up which programs you'd like to appear in PlayLink's context menu. You can pick external browsers to which you can send links, as well as desktop media players (by clicking the "Media Player Link Menu Settings" tab on the top). After picking your favorite programs, right-click on a media link in Firefox. Whether it's a direct link to an MP3 or a link to a YouTube video, you'll have the option to open it up using VLC, Foobar, or whatever other media player you decided on in the settings.

PlayLink is a free download, works in Firefox on Windows only.
