Mac OS X: Notational Velocity Alt is an alternate version to the popular Simplenote-syncing text editor Notational Velocity, offering several additional features for those seeking more functionality than the original app provides.
If you're a fan of all-you-can-eat plain text notes on your Mac, you've probably stumbled upon Notational Velocity already. If not, all you need to know is that it's a great desktop app that syncs all your plain text notes with the Simplenote service—our choice for keeping track of notes across multiple devices. Notational Velocity serves as a handy desktop alternative to using the Simplenote webapp, providing you with the added benefit of offline support and the use of keyboard shortcuts.
Notational Velocity Alt takes everything Notational Velocity does well and adds a handful of new features. Instead of offering only a vertical view for your notes, Notational Velocity Alt provides a horizontal pane view that's generally easier to work with if you have a widescreen display. If you'd prefer no list of notes at all, quick keyboard shortcuts are available to remove the top- or left-side pane for a clutter-free typing environment.
Notational Velocity Alt also adds a live "Preview" window, allowing you to preview notes written in Markdown, Textile, and MultiMarkdown. By default, notes are auto-formatted using HTML, removing any extra steps when writing, for example, a blog post.
