OC Weekly points out that even those paid to look like cooking experts on TV get things wrong. One of the most common is letting their index finger peek out on the bottom of a knife handle. For safety, comfort, and control, hold it like this.

It seems counter-intuitive, but anyone who's felt their knuckle chafe after making their way through a few onions knows that fingers should probably stay away from anywhere near the under-side of a sharp knife. By keeping your fingers on the side, you can move through more foods and save a few Band-Aids, as OC Weekly explains:
Professional chefs hold both sides of the blade with the handle tucked under their wrist, from which vantage point it is impossible to slice one's finger off (see picture above). Sadly, this is more common than one would think on the television.
You don't have to cook at home like a chef cooks in the galley, but you might want to try it out the next time you're chopping up dinner and see how it feels.
