About the Tips Box: Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons—maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in—the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Use Commonly Misspelled Words as Passwords to Learn Their Spellings
Caleywoods tells us an easy way to burn difficult word spellings into your brain:
Have a word that you frequently have trouble spelling? Pick a word that you often misspell, look up how to spell it correctly and set it as the password to a page you often visit where you have to login. Be sure to uncheck the "remember password" option, that's cheating! Type the password for a week or two and you should be well on your way to never misspelling it again!
Rediscover Old Web Sites with a Gmail Label for Welcome Emails
Kjlowe shows us how to rediscover sites you once found useful or interesting, but haven't visited in awhile:
I use Gmail filters to apply a label to all e-mails with "welcome to" in the subject line. At a glance I can see what forums and websites I've recently signed up for and rediscover sites that, at one time, I found interesting.
Avoid Web Distractions by Changing Your Bookmarks
NixonsGhost tells us his method for avoiding web distractions:
Probably something that everyone has come up with before, but just yesterday I was trying to make myself work on my assignment, but I kept getting sidetracked by the rest of the internet.
My solution? I replaced my most used bookmarks URLs with the URLs for websites that I was supposed to be researching. Turns a bad habit into a reminder.
Use M&Ms Minis Tubes as Durable, Reusable Quarter Rolls
Platypus Man shares his own clever use for candy tubes:
OK, so I've been doing this for a while, but I don't know how many people it really applies to, so I've debated suggesting it here.
Do you need an easy way to store quarters, presumably for laundry or something like that? I've found that the tubes used for M&Ms Minis are basically the perfect diameter — large enough so quarters can easily go in and out, but not so large that you have to worry about one getting sideways or anything. And if you can get one of the 1.94 oz XL tubes (like this), it can store a little over $20 in quarters, which should last you at least for a decent amount of time.
The tubes are harder to find now than they were a few years ago, but they're definitely still out there. And the candy is good too!
