There are apps that can turn your iPhone, Android, and other mobile OS device into a light meter—helping you determine the best exposure for a photo/video. This simple DIY hotshoe mount can make merging your smartphone and DSLR camera easier.
Nigel Nowhere from the Phototinker blog posted details on creating a DIY iPhone hotshoe holder that relieves the hassle of holding your iPhone-turned-light-meter while you shoot your photos. The project requires some pieces of hobby plastic, glued together and strategically cut.
If photography's your thing, you could easily modify this project for your own handheld device and DSLR. Nigel is even considering making a new aluminum plate-version to mount an iPad. (Note, though, that this DIY mount is best for tripod work, rather than handheld shots; this version of the mount even has a rubber band helping to keep it in place on the camera.)
Thinking of implementing this or have any smartphone light meter recommendations (the article mentions Pocket Light Meter and PanoTool)? Share them with us in the comments!
