De-Skunk Your Dog with Some Simple Chemistry

Dogs don't have the best of boundaries and that certainly applies with skunks. If your dog gets sprayed, you can remove the stench with a simple bit of chemistry.

High school chemistry teacher Sally B. Mitchell details the entire process in the video above, but you'll need little instruction to get the job done. Start with these ingredients:

  • One large bottle of hydrogen peroxide
  • One quarter cup of baking soda
  • Two teaspoons of liquid soap

First pour the peroxide into a large container (like a water pitcher), add the baking soda, and stir. After they've mixed, add the soap and mix again. From there you can just sponge the mixture onto your dog, taking care to keep it out of their eyes. Wait five minutes so the mixture can do its job and absorb the smell, then thoroughly rinse off your dog. The skunk smell will disappear, never to return—at least until your dog has another encounter.
