Got an spare closet and an affinity for good wine? An industrious user at DIY web site Instructables details how he turned his extra closet into a mini wine cellar.

Before I started sketching out what my wine closet was going to look like, I did some "back of the envelope" budgeting. Most entry-level wine cooling systems, such as the ChillR, start at $500 and quickly go up from there. Replacing the closet doors with properly-insulated doors would come in around $600 (more if installed). Add another $500 for everything else, and I was easily looking at $1,600. That seemed a bit much to me. After all, we're talking about a closet, not the Taj Mahal of wine here.

The solution: a whole lot of custom insulation, drywall, and a good portion of elbow grease. From start to finish, the project still set the user back around $500, but that includes the cost of some tools (like a cordless sander) that you may already have or don't necessarily need. Either way, it's probably not a project you'll want to undertake unless you're fairly serious about your wines. If you've gone down a similar road, let's hear how you store your wine collection in the comments.
