Haha, oops. This happens sometimes. :) We go through a lot of trouble to try and avoid double posts, but we are human after all! Read more

Reason, as much as I love it, is a specialized product. We're dealing with traditional DAWs here that offer more versatility. We're focusing on Cubase as the example because it's inexpensive and very much a traditional DAW. Had I known about Reaper earlier and I wasn't going to be at Google I/O this week I'd Read more

The software is really daunting. It's not that hard to use, though, so I think you'll pick it up pretty quickly. Glad you're looking forward to this! :) Read more

You're right, you definitely do not need everything on this list. People should buy what they need and not more, but I needed to create a list of equipment and software needed for the topics we'll be covering in subsequent weeks. Read more

Yeah, I assume it's going to get pretty brutal in the coming weeks but if you read the comments on most of our articles I don't think you'll find anything different. :) Read more

Yeah, I started with ProTools Free back when that existed way too long ago and thought it was okay but never loved it. Now I really don't like ProTools anymore and think it is severely overpriced. I think a lot of people use it out of habit or because they think they're supposed to and then get used to it. I think Read more

I didn't mention a lot of things, both in hardware and software. The point isn't to provide every possible option, but rather provide options that will be suitable for these lessons. We're learning traditional DAWs, here. GarageBand isn't one of them. That's why it wasn't mentioned. Read more

Reason is fantastic. It's not something we're going to be able to get into in these lessons, but it's definitely worth learning. It's a really great app. Read more

Yeah, the SM-57/58s (which are basically the same thing) are very popular. I think they tend to be better suited for live stuff than a studio and don't have as clear of a sound as a lot of others in their price range, but if you're going to get a few mics you should have a 57/58 in your collection. Some people sound Read more

I completely agree. I've been using Kontakt for years and it's wonderful. What are some of your favorite sound banks? Read more

We decided to leave out a lot of options in favor of simplicity. Offering too many choices makes it difficult for people, and these lessons are looking at learning a traditional DAW. As you said, Ableton isn't traditional. People following subsequent lessons would be lost if they chose it. Read more

I'm not familiar with Reaper but it sounds pretty great. I'll add it to the list. Thanks! Read more

Credit cards have point benefits. They're safer than using carrying lots of cash or using a debit card. I completely agree that people need to stop borrowing tons of money, but there are very practical, positive uses for credit and a good credit score. A home loan often makes more sense than paying with cash. If Read more

Yes, it sucks, but let's not pretend this is the result of any single president or human being on the planet. No one person or administration has control over the economy. Not Obama, not Bush, not anyone before them. This is about how credit bureaus choose to operate. It's not exactly logical, but they do it Read more

Oh, that's really good to know. Always nice when something has a few different uses. :) Read more
