From time to time, it feels like it would be nice to just stop giving a crap about the rat race and do what you want. The below video (which contains strong language) points out that you can, by simply caring about just a few things.
The video from Charisma on Command uses the imperfect example of Tyler Durden from Fight Club. While he’s not exactly what we’d call a role model, the movie itself is appealing because many of us feel a disconnect between the banal things we do every day to keep up and the life we wish we could live.
Charisma on Command attempts to salvage some of Durden’s ideology by pointing out what works and what doesn’t. Part of what makes Durden’s personality so powerful is that while he doesn’t care about most things, he does care very strongly about his personal philosophy. His own goals and ideas matter a great deal and he’s able to articulate them when people ask or challenge him.
Where Durden falls short, of course, is that he doesn’t include other people in that philosophy and causes destruction around him. Even those of us who went through a Fight Club phase in college probably grew out of it because deep down we don’t really want to destroy society. We just want to live authentically.
The video concludes that you can do both. By picking the things that matter to you and living consistently with that belief, you can stop cowering in fear of how others perceive you. You don’t have to feel the pressure to fit in or worry about losing your status as long as you’re pursuing the things that matter to you and not apologizing for it. Just, you know, try not to hurt anyone else in the process. It’s just a movie, after all.
