Sometimes social pressure wins out over your desire to kick it at home alone. When you’re not up for reveling with your family or friends, use this simple strategy.
If you’re invited to an event that you feel somewhat obligated to attend, Brittney Morgan at Apartment Therapy recommends you make a point to get there early before it gets crowded. And as soon as things get overwhelming, you make your exit. That way you show your buddies or loved ones that you care and appreciate being included, but you also don’t have to stay and burn the midnight oil. Besides, at a certain point, everyone may be so merry they won’t even remember that you took off early.
If you’re not sure how long you should hang around, it can help to set a goal for yourself. For example, make your goal to say hello to everyone there before you leave. Or make it being in one or two group photos. Or perhaps sip on one beverage and plan to leave as soon as you’ve finished it. Whatever it may be, get in, get out, and enjoy the rest of your evening.
